Good movie. I saw it a few years ago and I liked it, but not very very much. I think is a little slow and simple… Anyway, thanks for posting!

I liked this version of Zatoichi but for me the original series of 26 films featured Shintaro Katsu are the best

I’ll echo what everyone else is saying – Takeshi Kitano is a genius, and this is a fine example of that. It is a worthy addition to the canon of Zatoichi movies, with his own trademark bits. The deadpan humour is as sharp as the swords, (and then there’s the slapstick) and the action is beautifully done. I’d say “choreographed”, but I reserve that for the ending scene, which I won’t spoil by revealing. Let’s just say it is not what you’d expect at the end of a blind-swordsman movie, but is just right for a Beat Takeshi movie.

    Thanks SpAcE!

I LOVE the Ichi series – and this one most of all. Kitano-sama is a master of the subtle comedic touch at the exactly the right moment. (Anyone who’s seen Takeshi’s Castle knows that the man has a sense of humor!) This makes what would otherwise be just another samurai revenge story a rather human story as well. Plus, well, the gore. Kitano makes it easy for us sympathize with his protagonists and find the humor in their brutal lifestyle.

Look for a cameo appearance by a very young Saotome Taichi and look forward to a very Beat Takeshi finale! And now in glorious 720p! Glorious!

(For a taste of “Ichi” at the other end of the spectrum, I recommend Miike Takeshi’s “Ichi the Killer” hehehe)

If you’ve heard of Zatoichi and have never seen this one then you’re missing out big time. An instant modern classic.
