Owl and the Sparrow is a tiny tale, as low-to-the-ground as the little girl who searches for a family she can call her own. Pham Thi Han, who plays ten-year-old Thuy, describes her character as “down on her luck.” So she runs away from her uncle’s bamboo factory, where her work is never good enough, to the big city. A flower girl on the streets of Saigon, she discovers two other castaway hearts, in a man who takes refuge as a zookeeper and a flight attendant who’s looking for love.

    A love story with a kid involved; how unoriginal that does sound?
    but far from it this is about the love a child and children deserve and want to give in a setting where many struggle to survive or are lost to a life of menial work when they should be out playing; two adults likewise seeking to escape their loneliness become her family.
    It could so easily have been a shallow over-sentimental mess rather than the well crafted, emotional story it is. Realistically filmed, the little insert of random kids smiling gave you the sense the director really cared about this project and I think it shows. Han Thi Pham is a star.

    Just finished watching the film and i was not particularly impressed with it. A cheaply made & depressing movie with horrible camerawork. Shakey and close-up of the actors in most shots, making it very claustrophobic. The actors are just OK, not particularly impressive. A very average 5.5/10 for me. Hard to recommend.

    As a low budget drama I thought it worked on all levels. It’s nice to know that there are good indie film makers all over the world. The plot was sad but hopeful at the same time and makes you think about your own life and how you’re making use of the time you’ve been given.

    I don’t know how foreign people think about this movie. To me as a native viewer, this is a big failure. What a pity. Even though it has a great plot, terrible acting and bad camera work just ruin this movie badly.
